Fishing

“I keep trying other locations but I always come back to Tranquility. There’s just no other place that offers so much variety, such great guides, and so many shots at big fish.” John Bihldorff, Boston, Massachusetts
Tranquility Hill is ideally situated to fish the North and Middle Bights of Andros. Unlike other areas, the Andros bights experience tidal changes from both east and west, thereby insuring constantly moving water somewhere in the bights to find feeding bonefish.

While fish abound in the bights all year, it is from late November through January that pods of bones move from the west side to the east to spawn, making it possible to sight cast to schools of a few up to hundreds of fish as they streak past.

Throughout the season casting to 5 to 8-pound fish, often swimming alone or in pairs, is a frequent occurrence, while February is well known as the best month for shots at double-digit bones.

Maybe it was the day, or the tide, or the time of year, who knows... Nevertheless,  in my life, I have NEVER fished a place with such ravenous tarpon!

Drew Chicone

Author,  Fly Designer

The majority of the fishing in the bights is done from the casting deck of a flats skiff with the guide poling from a platform on the stern. Due to the vastness of the fishery, one can always find areas in the lee of land or mangroves to escape from the wind. There are also excellent places to wade. Since these flats are more dependent on tidal stage, if you want to wade, let your guide know at the beginning of the day.

If it's tarpon your after, you won't have to look to far. A short run from the lodge to the wild and rarely fished west side of Andros is teaming with tarpon that are more than willing to cooperate.   The ideal rod for these 80-150 lb fish is an 11wt, but you may encounter larger fish as well.  Brightly colored flies work well in this clear water estuary, but don't be afraid to pack a box of your old standbys.

Fishing the North and Middle Bights offers experienced anglers an exciting diversity of habitats and challenges that brings Tranquility Hill guests back year after year. At the same time neophyte anglers can learn, practice or hone their skills while casting to and catching bonefish!
